<![CDATA[Our drive to the Tellus Museum or The Run that was a “Smashing” Success!]]>Sun, 07 May 2017 11:27:04 GMThttp://semgtr.org/mg-home/our-drive-to-the-tellus-museum-or-the-run-that-was-a-smashing-success
Being the driver of the official follow up Mini Cooper, I get the opportunity to watch these wonderful lines of quirky little cars driving down the road. On a trip to Cairo, Georgia a few years back, I managed to snap a picture of a larger Vintage car leading 3 TD’s down the road.
The spectacle totally reminded me of a mother duck with her ducklings close behind. Forever after that, I’ve referred to the MGs I’m tailing as my “ducklings”. On May 6th, I found myself driving behind 6 lovely ducklings on a beautiful spring drive to the Tellus Museum. We are so fortunate to have fantastic members willing to take their time and effort to plan some incredible events. Today’s run was definitely one of those great events! All in all we had John & Margo McMillan’s TC, Bill & Andria Dinzole’s TD, Geoff & Pat Kent’s honorary stretch TC (aka AC), John & Maureen Kreimer’s A, Jack & Kathy Orkin’s Midget, Jim Mercure’s TD, Paul & Christine Brown’s Jaguar, my Mini, and an SUV with Ford the dog. We somehow managed to be out for most of the day without a single break down!

First up was a lunch stop with some delicious BBQ and a super sweet waitress who was super excited about our cars (and my groovy T-shirt from the Macon show). She was kind enough to take our picture, so I’ve included it here.

We lost Jim, his daughter Beth, and Maureen after lunch. They all had other commitments to get to; so sad for them since the Tellus Museum was awesome! Many of our group was thrilled to find out that the museum offers a free admission to Bank of America card holders on the first weekend of the month! If you’ve never been the the Tellus, I’d highly recommend it as something to put on your list.

After strolling the museum, we headed for home. The weather had warmed up to a perfect 72 degrees, so I rolled down the windows and opened the sun roof in solidarity with my ducklings. With the windows down, it was jolting to hear a tremendous smashing sound as we rolled up to an intersection. I looked up to see a Ford type truck slamming into the drivers side rear quarter of a gorgeous red vintage convertible Corvette. I think the collective gasps of the people in the 3 antique cars in front of me could be heard at least a block back! To say we’re all thankful that it was not one of them is an understatement. All I can say is that I stayed protectively close to my ducklings the rest of the way home.

Thanks, John and Margo, for a wonderful day!

Fondly, the mother Duck… Beth

<![CDATA[Sweetwater Brewery Tour]]>Thu, 16 Mar 2017 23:51:13 GMThttp://semgtr.org/mg-home/sweetwater-brewery-tourSaturday Brunch – Scenic neighborhoods drive – tour Sweetwater Brewery

We have a really fun activity planned for Saturday, March 25th. If you have one, bring along a navigator because this will be a nice couples driving event. No navigator or no working MG? That's okay too! It will start with everyone meeting at 10:00AM at Gruby’s New York Deli near the intersection of GA400 and I-285 for brunch. Please be aware that Gruby’s opens at 10AM. Then at about 11:30AM Paul Flexner will lead us on a scenic drive through some of the nice Sandy Springs and Buckhead residential neighborhoods on our way to Sweetwater Brewery. We should arrive at the brewery around 12:15PM. Sweetwater has agreed to rope off some parking spaces for us and provide a tour for our group before their regular tours start for the general public. We can do some beer sampling and will be able to show off our cars as the general public arrive. After that everyone can head home on their own when they like. This will be a joint event for both the Peachtree MG Registry and the Southeastern MG-T Register.

If you don’t plan to meet us for brunch, please be at Gruby’s by 11AM to participate in the drive, or at Sweetwater by noon for the tour and sampling. Sweetwater Brewery is located at 195 Ottley Dr., Atlanta. Also, don’t forget to bring your ID…you will need to have it to gain entry for the tour even if you are not sampling beer.

Please RSVP or notify me (jayfranklin@mindspring.com) if you plan to attend and also indicate where you will be joining us. I need to give Gruby’s and Sweetwater a count for parking and tours.

<![CDATA[The Uncertain T Legacy]]>Tue, 06 Dec 2016 18:38:25 GMThttp://semgtr.org/mg-home/the-uncertain-t-legacy6570996In the midst of this crazy Presidential election, I’m thrilled to say that the SEMGTR Election should be uneventful and lack controversy. Thanks to all of you who read and voted on the new bylaws, our election should be blissfully simple. The new board will consist of 3 elected members. The nominating committee has presented the names for your consideration, and we’ll be sending out an email ballot within the next few days; no campaign ads, no mud slinging!

As you probably surmised from the paragraph above, the new bylaws have been approved by a quorum vote. That said, let’s get ready to turn this club around!
Our planning meeting is set for November 12 and we need folks to host events. From the survey we sent last month, our members would like some Tech Sessions. If you have a topic you’d like to learn or teach about, please let me know. If you have an idea for a fun event, go ahead and volunteer. For our party folks, if you’d like to host a party, we’d love to let you.

Please let me know what type of event you’d like to host by Nov. 11, 2016.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We’ll see you on the 12th at JR’s BBQ.

Fondly, Beth

<![CDATA[The Uncertain T Legacy]]>Sat, 03 Sep 2016 11:10:05 GMThttp://semgtr.org/mg-home/the-uncertain-t-legacy6254711Dear Members,

One of the things we pride ourselves on within the SEMGTR is the ability to frequently adapt to the changing needs and wants of our membership. It’s this open minded attitude that has allowed the club to weather some tough years. We sent out an email survey a few weeks back, and the results were quite interesting. We discovered that the #1 reason people join the club is to socialize with other MG people. We also learned that Tech info, runs, and gatherings were most important, with shows running a bit behind. Lastly, we asked for volunteers for various areas. While we had a several members volunteer for hosting events, writing articles, and event helpers, we did not have a single volunteer to run for a board position. This is our inherent problem every year and the reason for our brainstorming meeting last month. Our bylaws list the following board positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor, Registrar, and Past President. That doesn’t take into consideration the newer unofficial position of Webmaster/Social Media. While we have maintained our membership numbers over the past few years despite heavy losses, our core active group is not large enough to support 7 board positions plus the webmaster.

The brainstorming meeting was attended by a large group of consistently active members along with our newest club member. During this lively meeting, we discussed the survey results and the direction for the future. The overwhelming consensus was to consider continuing as a social and driving club. Most members felt that with the widespread information to be found online, the “register” part of our duties was somewhat redundant and the source of a lot of additional work. If we adjust to the current needs of the members, we could potentially drop down to a 3 member board. Within that board would be a Treasurer, Editor, and Board Chair /President. Currently, the treasurer, editor, and registrar have the largest job descriptions. We currently have a willing editor (thanks Geoff!) and potential Treasurer. With the suggested changes, the positions of Registrar, Secretary, and Vice President would be eliminated. We are presently putting together an exploratory committee to look into de-formalizing and amending the bylaws.

As the bylaws currently stand, the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Registrar would need to be filled this year. In the interest of following the bylaws, we have put together a nominating committee for 2016.

Board Member - Geoff Kent, email to: editor@semgtr.org
Member - Andria Dinzole, email to: andrialbd@live.com
Member - Jim Mercure, email to: jim@raydeo.com

If you would like to run for a board position, please contact a member of the nominating committee during the month of September. Geoff will be out of town, but Andria and Jim will both be available. Please keep in mind that you may not nominate another member without their permission.

If you would like to be on the exploratory committee to de-formalize and amend the bylaws, please email me at president@semgtr.org. In addition, we could use someone with a law background on this committee.

I’d like to thank everyone who took their time to participate in the survey and the brainstorming meeting. We will continue working to honor the original spirit upon which the club was founded. In the words of one of our founders, “just get together, have fun, have a tech session occasionally, talk cars, kick tyres, drive a little… and press on regardless… OH, I left out FOOD… yes occasionally have a little BBQ, finger food, pot of chili… etc."

Here’s to the future! Beth
